Introduction

The SIA (Security Industry Authority) CCTV Operator Course is mandatory for getting a license to become a CCTV operator in the UK. It is necessary to hold a valid license under the Security Industry Act, 2001. This course allows a person willing to become a private CCTV operative to work in the industry. The role of CCTV is not limited to a few sectors; it has a broader role in various industries. The SIA CCTV Operator Course aims to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for those who wish to obtain a valid CCTV operative license. This course also enables learners to pursue further courses such as door supervision and security guarding.

Eligibility for the Course

A learner must be 18 years or older.

A learner must be 18 years or older.Minimum English Level 1 language skills or B1 Level or Level 1 at ESOL.

Must provide one identity document (like a passport) and two proofs of address.

Duration of the Course

The SIA CCTV Operator course spans over three (3) days, requiring a minimum of 23 guided and contact hours to maintain learning between the trainer and the learners. Distance learning components may also be included.

Working Within the Private Security Industry
This introductory module covers the basics and fundamental concepts of the private security industry, including the legal aspects, health and safety protocols, fire safety awareness, emergency procedures, communication skills, and customer service best practices.
Working as a CCTV Operator Within the Private Security Industry
In this unit, learners delve deeper into the operational procedures and guidelines for CCTV operators. It includes an understanding of the CCTV code of practices, relevant legislation, the importance of effective communication, emergency procedures, the functions of CCTV systems, and maintaining health and safety in the CCTV control room.
Practical Operation of CCTV Equipment Within the Private Security Industry
This unit focuses on the practical application of operating CCTV equipment. Learners gain hands-on experience in using CCTV systems, ensuring they can effectively manage and control the equipment in real-world scenarios.

CCTV operators work in various settings such as public buildings, retail stores, corporate companies, and airports. They typically earn between £12 to £15 per hour. Experienced operators can earn up to £35,000 a year, while CCTV control managers can earn between £25 to £35 per hour.

Assessment & Examination
Upon completing the course, an examination and assessment are conducted by the Security Industry Agency to evaluate the learner's capabilities and eligibility for obtaining the license. The assessment includes two examinations and a practical assessment. A valid CCTV operator license is awarded to those who pass the examinations and assessment.
License Cost
Once you qualify and receive certification, you must apply and pay £184 to the SIA Home Office to obtain a license.
Purpose of CCTV Operatives
SIA CCTV operators are responsible for security concerns, meticulously observing venues and places, especially for any suspicious activities. Only licensed CCTV operators are allowed to work in the private security industry, following the Security Industry Act.
